Explosion and Dust fx lighting

A test with all the lighting and everythin to see how its lookin. There will be a projectile hitting the sign on the roof. Its not just a random thing blowin up :0p. Also the lighting on the turtle needs to be offset and I will take out the camera shake in the scene and do it post.

explosion and dust fx test

My first real attempt at fx for this project. I am kinda fudging it as I go. All handkeyed geometry in the maya scene-frame by frame. I'm still trying to get a nicer shape for the explosions as they are quite spherical at the moment. Obviously you can look below for the final look/colour/lighting style.

Anime style explosion

Ok, I've decided to add some 2d anime style explosions to make the style of the shots more interesting. Here's a look dev (first attempt) at a 2d stylistic explosion hand drawn in pshop. I'm also thinking if I should animate it in 2d or fake it in 3d. So those images I said were final.....mmm guess they're not anymore :0p

Lens Flare

I've been trying to push the look of the final comp and was inspired by the JJ Abrams lens flare. It might be a bit much but I can always pull it back. Its all  handmade! No plug-ins or anythin.

Intro update

I thought I'd change the lighting a little bit on Leo and show a bit  more of his face. Also I changed the building he is brooding on to a church and filled the background with more buildings.

Ninja Shadows

The Ninja Turtles should be use to living in the dark and away from humans. They keep fit by free-running on the city tops of New York at Sunset but are never allowed to be seen.

More of sewer land and lighting underneath NY city. Animation is still in blocking stage so the poses might look a little rough.


How I am lighting Leo. I want to hide him alot in shadows because he is a ninja and stealthy.

Background I'm working on when he jumps into sewer land. I was thinkin of making it steampunk-ish with lots of steam and machinery.

Fake Depth of Field

Here is how I faked Depth of Field in my animation. Since I won't be rendering it I'll just comp layers into Aftereffects.
1) Here is Leo jumping on a building.
2) Here is an antenna model I built that will zoom in  front of the camera during the action. I created a sequence with a bluescreen to key out.
 3) And the result is just a layer with Gaussian blur over the top. I will use this technique several times in this short. Simple but effective.


Some backgrounds I put together to feel more for the style and mood of the piece. I'm relying more on shapes and colour and lighting rather than texture and detail.

Ninja Turtle Project

This page will be my work in progress on a Ninja Turtle Project I am going to start working on. It will be a really short film, mainly to sharpen animation skills and to be prepared for when a studio starts hiring for the new Ninja Turtle movie!

I turned the Morpheus Rig into Leonardo. I don't think I'll texture him since I'm not any good at it but if anyone wants to volunteer go ahead. I re-modeled the fingers and toes and re-skinned it.

 I might give away this Ninja Turtle Rig once I'm done too.
